Small sedans should be economical yet fun to drive. The Nissan Sentra is all that and more. The sporty Sentra offers a surprisingly roomy interior and solid transportation, but can be equipped with a number of options to produce a mini-luxury car. The big news for 2017 is the introduction of the 2017 Sentra Turbo, plus an expanded selection of available safety technologies.

What's Different in the 2017 Nissan Sentra?

The 2017 Sentra SR Turbo is new for 2017, adding 58 horsepower and 49 lb-ft of torque versus the 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine from the 2016 model. The Turbo is equipped with a 1.6-liter direct injection turbo 16-valve DOHC I-4 engine crafted from aluminum alloy. You can order it with either a 6-speed manual transmission or an optimally-tuned CVT. The Turbo also provides bigger brakes, recalibrated steering and a sport suspension. For those who crave maximum fuel economy, the 1.8-liter standard engine delivers 29 city and 38 highway MPG.

The D-Stop technology built into the continuously variable transmission does an excellent job of simulating gear changes. The Sentra delivers its performance quietly, as the 2017 model sees the introduction of thicker glass and insulation to help keep out road noise.

What are the Differences in Design?

The 2016 Sentra won raves for its handsome redesign, and the 2017 model continues the upscale look, with its bold grill, aerodynamic front fascia, and signature boomerang-shaped lights with LED accents fore and aft on SL and SR models. The Sentra styling resembles the larger Nissan Altima, which means its attractive and exciting. The wheel designs on the Sentra convey a sleek look not found on most other compacts.

The interior of the Nissan Sentra is a standout within its segment. For 2017, Nissan improved the sound system’s interface. There is so much room in the Sentra cabin that, technically, the EPA classifies the car as midsize. The center console is significantly larger in 2017, giving the cabin a more generous look. The soft-touch materials and the superior build-quality make Sentra a great value that you can depend on.

What are Some of the Safety Features?

The 2017 Sentra offers a standard rearview camera in the SV trim level and above. Sentra can also be equipped with adaptive cruise control that maintains distance with the car ahead, as well as forward emergency braking and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. Sentra’s Easy Fill tire alert system verifies that you are pumping air into the tire and tells you when you’ve reached the correct pressure. It even informs you when you overfill the tire.
